If you find difficult to
create Finnish r sound I try to give
you directions how to pronounce it.
Finnish r is also called trilled r. Listen here how it sounds like: trilled r sound
First we have to find the
right place where we create the vibration. Say d sound and feel where the tip of your tongue goes. Repeat d sound a few times and you notice that
the tip of your tongue touches the back of your front teeth. Your tongue
doesn’t come between your teeth but it stays behind the teeth. That is the very same place where you create
the Finnish r sound.
Now you know the place
and next we have to think how you make the vibration. D sound helps you with it. We have to create some speed for
vibration and d gives you the speed.
Begin with repeating d as fast as
you can. Take any vowel with d, for
example e, and add n to the end. So now try to repeat den as fast as you can several times.
After you have done this and your tongue comes familiar with speed drop the vowel
and repeat just dn very fast several
times. Without vowel the movement of your tongue is faster. Next try to make
vibration between d and n and say drn. It sounds like you try to start an engine but it doesn’t
start. Repeat this several times and when you feel the vibration in the tip of
your tongue drop the helping sounds and say just rrrrrr. It sounds like you started the engine finally.
